TECHNOLOGY

① SMART GRID
The smart grid is a redesign of our current electrical grid that includes advancements in two way communication. This allows generation from multiple sources (including your house), as well as a more efficient infrastructure and more frequent energy use information for the consumer.
② ENERGY STORAGE

The storage of energy addresses spikes in demand on the energy grid at times when the production of electricity is low. A common example is the use of batteries.

⑤ HEAT PUMP

This device transfers heat from a cool to a warm space in order to more effficiently regulate temperatures.

⑧ ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Utilizing innovations in technologies creates more energy efficient buildings, such as your household.

Examples of these types of technologies include: LED light bulbs, aerators and smart thermostats.

⑩ CARBON CAPTURE, UTILIZATION AND STORAGE

This is the process of capturing carbon dioxide and storing it, or using it for other purposes, so that it will not enter the atmosphere.

⑫ DISTRIBUTED ENERGY RESOURCES

Diversification of the energy grid allows for energy to be produced from a variety of smaller scale sources (both
renewable and nonrenewable) rather than from a singular power plant.

CLEANER ENERGY SOURCES

④ HYDROGEN

Hydrogen is an energy carrier that delivers or stores energy. Hydrogen can be used in fuel cells to generate electricity or power and heat.

⑦ NATURAL GAS

A major source of energy in the U.S., natural gas is an energy source that generally produces fewer emissions than other fossil fuels.

⑪ RENEWABLES (SOLAR, WIND, WATER, GEOTHERMAL, BIOMASS, METHANE)

These energy sources are naturally replaced and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution associated with energy production.

⑬ NUCLEAR

This is a large source of domestic, clean energy with high operating and waste storage costs.

This is one of the biggest ways that you can make a difference, as there are ever growing opportunities for energy related careers.

⑥ ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION AND GETTING AROUND

Electric car being chargedA great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to think about your transportation habits. This includes carpooling, taking public transit or encouraging your family to purchase an electric vehicle (EV).

⑨ ENERGY CONSERVATION

Your actions make a difference. This includes turning off lights when not in use, wearing a sweater instead of turning up the heat, unplugging electrical devices and anything else you can think of.
